15 S&P 500 constituents, $733B aggregate market cap; detail metrics on the 15 largest.
2Performance — equal-weight vs S&P 500
Each member normalized to 100 then averaged (equal weight, 12 months): industry -2% vs SPY +10%. Equal-weight leans toward the smaller names; cap-weight tells the mega-cap story (treemap above).
3Valuation dispersion
Trailing P/E across members: median 21.0x — the spread around it is the industry's internal debate about which business models survive.
4Quality vs valuation
ROIC against P/E (log axis): the top-left is quality at a discount, the bottom-right is expensive mediocrity.

The **1–3 year setup is improving fundamentally but becoming more politically and financially constrained**. Analysts broadly see stronger electricity demand and utility capex, led by data centers, manufacturing, electrification and grid replacement; they also warn that affordability, permitting, financing and execution could limit shareholder returns.
## Tailwinds and headwinds
- **Demand growth:** Morningstar expects U.S. electricity demand to grow about 1.4% annually through 2030, with data-center demand quadrupling by 2030.[1] S&P Global’s RRA forecasts roughly $1.3 trillion of U.S. utility capex in 2026–30.[2]
- **Large-load customers:** Bank of America analysts estimate data centers could add about 125 GW of load through 2030, while planned regulated-utility capacity additions may fall more than 100 GW short of total needs.[3]
- **Headwinds:** High interest rates and massive capex pressure balance sheets; permitting, interconnection delays and natural-gas supply constraints can postpone growth. Affordability is increasingly provoking regulatory resistance to rate increases.[4]
- **Execution risk:** Data-center forecasts may be revised down if projects are delayed or canceled; the Congressional Research Service noted slower-than-expected completion of large-load interconnections.[5]
## Competition and pricing power
Utilities retain strong **local monopoly power** because regulated distribution and transmission networks are difficult to duplicate. Pricing power, however, sits primarily with regulators: companies generally earn an allowed return on prudently incurred investment rather than freely setting prices.
The most favorable position is with utilities that have attractive territories, visible load growth and constructive regulators. Large data centers may improve economics by signing long-term contracts or bearing incremental grid costs; JPMorgan’s Mark Stricker described allocating such costs to new data-center customers as a potential “silver bullet.”[4] Conversely, regulators may socialize infrastructure costs or cap bills if households face steep increases, limiting returns.[1][4]
## Bull and bear cases
- **Bull case:** A structural end to stagnant demand, accelerating rate base growth, higher transmission investment and customer-funded data-center infrastructure could support earnings growth and eventually reduce valuation concerns. Morningstar expects utility investment to rise 17% in 2026 and another 10% in 2027.[1]
- **Bear case:** Capex and debt surge faster than cash flow; higher rates compress equity valuations; load forecasts disappoint; and regulators reject rate increases amid affordability concerns. Fitch downgraded its North American power-and-utilities outlook to “deteriorating,” while S&P Global shifted to “stable” but still flagged high capex and inflation risks.[4]
